This striking portrait belongs to the series of decorative, boldly coloured female studies Fergusson painted between 1908 and 1910. Moving away from Impressionist techniques, Fergusson concentrated instead on outlined areas of carefully balanced colour, which create a sense of rhythm across the canvas. Le Voile Persan is one of the earliest works in which his model is just one decorative element, neither more nor less important than the floral patterning of the 'Persian Veil' of the title.
