William Hunter's sister married James Baillie who was parish minister of Bothwell before taking up the Chair of Divinity at Glasgow. The painter, Cordiner, was a student at the Academy of the Fine Arts in Glasgow, and it seems likely that the painting was given to Hunter; Hunter maintained contacts with the University and with artists from the Academy some of whom passed through London on their way to Rome to study.
