"Reverend James Baillie (1723-1778)" 1757

oil painting

CRE PINE, Robert Edge; (English; 1730-1788)

Materials:
oil on canvas
Dimensions:
69.2 x 57.2
Frame:
78.0 x 67 oval
Notes:
The family of the sitter, James Baillie, was close to our founder's family. In 1758, Baillie had become Minister of Hamilton and Bothwell, and married William Hunter's sister Dorothea. With Hunter's help, he became Professor of Divinity at Glasgow University in 1775. This portrait may have been commissioned to commemorate his marriage to Dorothea, and was in Hunter's collection in London in the 1770s. According to a letter to Hunter, Pine cut it down from an original rectangular shape to its present oval size himself.
