"The Virgin and Sleeping Child"
AFTER RENI, Guido; (Italian; 1575-1642)
oil on canvas
48.9 x 61.7
67.5 x 77.0
115 copy 1 (b) PEPPER, Stephen 1984 Guido Reni, Oxford
This painting is a copy of Guido Reni's Virgin and the Sleeping Child of 1627, in the Galleria Doria Pamphili, Rome. The quality of this painting is such that it is unlikely to be the work for which Hunter paid £105 in 1771, and which Strange had engraved in 1753. It is recorded that Hunter's protégé, the Glasgow painter William Cochrane (1738-1785) made a copy of Hunter's Correggio, so it is possible that this canvas is also a copy produced for the Academy of the Fine Arts in Glasgow. Several paintings recorded in Hunter's collection did not come to Glasgow in 1807, having been retained by Hunter's heir Matthew Baillie, so it is possible that the Reni was among those that stayed in London.
