LABEL: "Charlotte Bishop, wife of Sir William Maynard Bart of Walthamstow (1721-1772), M.P. for Essex from 1759 to 1772, was a patient of Hunter. A mother of three boys and a girl, Lady Maynard sat five times to Reynolds in June 1759, and two more time in September 1760. Wearing a fashionable mauve ermine-lined robe of Turkish inspiration over a white dress, she belongs to a group of female portraits from the 1750s in which Reynolds' sitters wore masquerade Turquish dress. The French Louis XVI frame, very unusual for an English portrait, may have been made specially for Hunter" (Michael Gregory, 21/03/1989).
Daughter of Sir Cecil Bishopp, she married in 1751 and died in childbirth on 16 May 1762. Her husband sat to Reynolds for his own portrait 7 to 8 years after his wife, in 1767.
