Described by Robert Strange in his sale catalogue as 'altogether among the most desirable compositions of Paul Veronese', this painting was identified in 1952 as a fine example of the work of Scarsellino by Sir Denis Mahon [letter in object file]. One of 19 works bought at Strange's 1771 sale, this painting must have seemed an essential subject for acquisition because of Hunter's profession as accoucheur and specialist in obstetrics. The name to which Strange attached the painting, that of Veronese (Paolo Caliari 1528-1588), placed it with the Venetian school which - with the exception of Titian's portraits - Reynolds warned Royal Academy students to avoid. The Venetian influence of Jacopo Bassano can certainly be seen in the composition. Scarsellino's handling of paint, however, is quite distinctive: here, as often, it is worked with small brushes in thin, matt pigment, in a manner reminiscent of Dossi. The colouring of the women's drapery provides a distinctive sequence of blue-red-yellow-green accents, which are the hallmark of the Renaissance Ferrarese painter, Garofalo (1481-1559). The subject has been identified as the birth of the Virgin, since the mother can more easily be identified as St Anne than the aged St Elizabeth, and the father is comparable to Joachim in Scarsellino's Birth of the Virgin in Sta. Maria Maggiore, Pieve di Cento. The painting was attributed to Scarsellino on the basis of comparison with similar paintings of the Nativity of the Virgin, and of St John the Baptist.
