Notes:
William Smith was sent to London to train as a portraitist at st Martin's Lane Academy by his local patron, the Duke of Richmond of Goodwood House. As well as portraits, Smith painted landscapes and fruit and flower pieces. He produced a series of firelight scenes, much indebted to Dutch 17th century art, in particular to the paintings of Aert van der Neer (1603-1677).
