Notes:
This amateur drawing of a characteristically alert young gentleman was recently identified as portrait of the anatomist, and founder of the Hunterian, William Hunter (1718-1783). William's elder brother James (c.1717-1745) studied law in Edinburgh, but his passion was for painting. This work is drawn on professionally prepared vellum, an animal skin stretched over a wooden frame like a canvas.
