Notes:
Rousseau came to England with David Hume in January 1766 to escape French persecution from the revolutionnary ideas he had expressed in 'Du Contrat Social' (1762). Ramsay's portrait was painted in London, and later given to David Hume. This print is among a group from the founder, Dr. Hunter's collection, that are recorded hanging on the stairs of the Hunterian Museum by Laskey, 1813.
