This (worn impression) of an engraving of 1587 showing an academy of the fine arts, was in the collection of founder Dr. William Hunter. It is an allegory of the study of the fine arts, engraved from a drawing by Stradanus, who was a Flemish artist closely involved in the first art academy, the Accademia del Disegno in Florence. It demonstrates the various studies appropriate to the fine arts, and these are labelled throughout the image. The principal ones are Pictura, Statuaria, Sculptura, and Anatomia. The skeleton and the cadaver used in demonstrating the bones and the muscles, are the focus of students drawing at the bottom of the plate. An anatomist is seen about to flay a suspended corpse, in order to demonstrate the muscles of the body. There is a close resemblance between the pose of this figure and the écorché which Hunter cast in plaster, and set up for use in his lectures at the St Martin's Lane Academy to the Society of Artists c1753, and which was transferred in 1768 to the Royal Academy. The original drawing of 1573 by Jan van der Straet (known as Stradanus) was in the collection of Hunter's fellow physician Sir Hans Sloane (British Museum 5214-2). A similar, labelled, allegorical drawing of an Academy by Maratta (Chatsworth) is mentioned by Jonathan Richardson, in the introduction to his Essay on the Theory of Painting, 1715.
