axinite; large brown crystals, with albite crystals on amphibolite
Dauphine, [Isere], [France]
Very fine large specimen. Museum catalogues only gives a "Hunterian" provenance ( ie in the Hunterian before the move to Gilmorehill around 1877), but fine specimens of "thumerstone" are recorded as being in the museum by Captain Laskey, in his description of the Hunterian in 1813. This is the old name for axinite, and may indicate that they were actually Hunter specimens.
