pyrargyrite; fine large intergrown prismatic crystals on siderite, and galena
[Freyberg (=Freiberg), Saxony], [Germany]
Trustees Catalogue (FORDYCE) 1797 58 (silver)
From William Hunter's original bequest. Very fine despite damage, and light-dulling. The Trustees catalogue of 1794-7 says "58. Rothgulden Ertz crystallized in Octagonal Prysms perfectly detruncated of a dark red colour on a vein of Galena, which is in a vein of Spathose Iron Ore and the Crystals of the Silver Ore are also in some places covered with Crystals of Sapthose Iron Ore - from Freyberg". The crystal has been broken and repaired - looks as though it may be an 18th century repair?
