CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on board
27.5 x 22.1
The linear style is characteristic of Mackintosh's sketchbook drawings from the 1890s. Another contemporaneous study is in a sketchbook from this collection. Four further direct studies of the Rose are documented: 'Moss Rose' c. 1898-9 (untraced); 'Faded Roses' 1905 (Glasgow Museums); 'Yellow Rose, Chiddingstone' 1910 (untraced); and 'White Roses' 1920 (Glasgow School of Art). As a stylised motif, the rose was to become a favourite decorative device in Mackintosh's design work. This drawing contains five opening buds of a Rosa cultivar.
