inscr. b.r. in pencil "THE CASTLE. / HOLY ISLAND"
When Mackintosh first drew Holy Island's sixteenth century castle in the early 1900s, it was unoccupied. In 1902 Edwin Hudson, the proprietor of 'Country Life' magazine, acquired the building and that year commissioned the English architect Edwin Lutyens to turn it into a habitable home. This watercolour shows the common seashore plant Armeria maritima.
