(cat.206) BILLCLIFFE, Roger 1979 'Mackintosh Watercolours', London: John Murray
The Mackintoshes visited Mont Louis at least twice during their years in France from 1923 to 1927. This, along with four other flower studies of 1925, constitute Mackintosh's last botanical drawings. By this time Mackintosh was focusing on a series of landscape watercolours. The subject here is most certainly Black or Austrian Pine (Pinus nigra), which is indigenous in southern Europe and is commonly planted there and elsewhere.
