Notes:
This highly symbolic watercolour was originally attributed to Frances and Margaret Macdonald. However, it is now thought to have been painted by J. Herbert McNair. Its meaning is unclear. It has been suggested the fountain is a representation of the fountain of life with the tree of life. The tree was a popular motif used by 'The Four', often as a symbol of life and/or knowledge.
