Preliminary drawing for "Summer" c.1893
CRE MACDONALD, Margaret; (English; 1864-1933)
pencil and wash on brown tracing paper
25.3 x 17.3 (irregular)
This is a preliminary study for the watercolour "Summer" of 1897, one of four watercolours depicting the seasons produced by Margaret and Frances Macdonald between 1897 and 1898 (Coll. Glasgow Museums). It shows a highly stylised female figure combined with relevant symbols such as the rose. The rose was a popular motif in the work of the 'Glasgow Four' and their Glasgow contemporaries.
