In 1902, Mackintosh furnished and decorated a drawing room for Mrs Robert Rowat at 34 Kingsborough Gardens, Glasgow. Duplicates of the pair of showpiece Rowat cabinets were made for the Mackintoshes' home at 120 Mains Street and brought to their next home in Florentine Terrace, Glasgow. Demure when closed, the doors open to reveal a highly decorative interior depicting stylised figures in glass set into silvered panels which play a major part. The formal composition is equally rich and the components of the carcass are tapered and curved into arabesques of complimentary curves. Even the lower edges of the doors are swept into measured curves. Painting the furniture allowed Mackintosh to create a flawless surface which masked the carved, raw timber beneath.
