The Macdonald sisters produced an illuminated manuscript, 'The Christmas Story' c.1895-6, comprising hand-painted watercolours contained within a beaten brass cover. Other versions of the pages are held by Glasgow School of Art. In this design, the tree is both a stylised Christmas tree and a symbol for the Tree of Life.
