The angel Gabriel holds out the Child, contained in a golden globe, to the kneeling Virgin informing her of the impending birth of Christ. The stylised lilies, also employed in 'The Star of Bethlehem' and 'The Virgin Mary', are symbols of her purity.
A beaten panel related to this design was exhibited by Margaret Macdonald at the 5th Arts and Crafts Soceity Exhibition, London, 1896, and illustrated in 'The Studio', IX, 1896, p. 203. See GLAHA 41552.
