The stylised lilies, also employed in 'The Star of Bethlehem' and 'The Virgin Mary', are symbols of her purity. A beaten panel related to this design was exhibited by Margaret Macdonald at the 5th Arts and Crafts Soceity Exhibition, London, 1896, and illustrated in 'The Studio', IX, 1896, p. 203.
