Notes:
This is a refined preliminary design of the grate for the card room at Hous'hill. In the cast iron plate at the back of the fire Mackintosh intended to incorporate the initials of Major and Mrs Cochrane (Catherine Cranston, the tea room entrepreneur and Mackintosh's important patron) and the date. It is possible that Major John Cochrane had some influence on the rather traditional design. From contemporary descriptions the outstanding feature of the fireplace seems to have been the decoration of the surround in which parallel strips of rough-cut plate glass were embedded end on, reflecting green, gold and violet light.
