Notes:
In 1903-4 Miss Cranston and her husband Major Cochrane commissioned Mackintosh to decorate and furnish the principal interiors of their home, Hous'hill, Nitshill and design several items of furniture. This is a subtle design of curvilinear and vertical forms, and stood as a fitted unit against the south wall. At the same time, it is puzzling for it seems impractically shallow; perhaps it was created for aesthetic purposes only and concealed an undesirable architectural feature. This sketch is almost identical to the final design, with the exception of a slight variation in the size of the glass doors and the number of vertical rods placed in the bottom section.
