"The Moonlit Garden"
CRE MACDONALD, Frances; (English; 1873-1921)
pencil with grey and white wash on brown tracing paper
31.3 x 52.0
The artist uses lillies and the moon, traditional symbols of chastity, to reinforce her image of female purity and innocence. This composition has the ordered poise of a scene from a masque or theatrical tableau; such productions were popular entertainment among artistic circles in Glasgow, Liverpool and elsewhere at the turn of the century.
