"Alas! Alas! I know not what to do": photograph of a watercolour 1896-7
DES MACDONALD, Frances; (English; 1873-1921)
photograph adhered to the card
12.6 x 7.6 (photo)
37.9 x 27.6 (incl. card)
inscr. in pencil on recto of card b.l. "Illustration to The Defence of Guinivere [sic] / by Frances E. McNair"
See GLAHA 52877.
This illustrated the poem 'King Arthur's Tomb'. This is an unusual illustration of Lancelot and Guenevere's final meeting at King Arthur's tomb. Macdonald chooses to dress Guenevere as a queen, rather than as a nun, as was much more common in other illustrations of this incident.
