Sketchbook of a tour in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire etc., p. 22: Pew canopy, St Michael, Buckland, Gloucestershire 1894
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on cartridge drawing paper
17.8 x 11.5
inscr. t.r.: "Canopy over side seats. / Buckland .Church" and b.r. "Part of bench - / given to church / in the year of our lord 1615 -"
The canopy forms part of the early 17th-century "Shepherds' benches" in the south aisle of the church. The two lower drawings are studies of the canopy's frieze and its moulding. The unusual orientation of the benches, along the church's south wall, is similar to Mackintosh's placing of his side pews at Queen's Cross Church in Glasgow.
