Sketchbook of a tour in Gloucestershire, Worcestershire etc., p. 39: Rood-loft stair turret and adjoining bay, St Peter, Winchcombe, Gloucestershire 1894
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on cartridge drawing paper
17.8 x 11.5
inscr.b.l.: "BASE. / WINCHCOMBE. / CHURCH"
The church was built entirely in the Perpendicular Gothic style between 1458 and 1468. Mackintosh's interest in drawing the rood-loft stair turret may have arisen from the depressed-ogee form of its roof, a feature which was favoured by several architects, including Mackintosh, at the turn of the 19th -century. At bottom left Mackiintosh has depicted the upper and lower string courses.
