This study is closer to a cone flower (rudbeckia or echinacea) than a scabious. Mackintosh lived in the Glasgow district of Langside in 1894. The drawing is one of ten flower studies in the sketchbook. Mackintosh's interest in this genre stems partly from the design courses he took at the Glasgow School of Art where, along with other contemporary art schools, the study and analysis of plant form was an essential element in the training of designers. The pages have been numbered inaccurately in an unknown hand as pages 24 - 25.
