This study of a turtlehead (chelone species) would have been found in gardens in the Glasgow district of Langside where Mackintosh was living in 1896. It is one of ten flower drawings in the sketchbook. Mackintosh's interest in this genre stems partly from the design courses he took at Glasgow School of Art where, along with other contemporary art schools, the study and analysis of plant form was an essential element in the training of designers. The pages have been numbered inaccurately in an unknown hand as pages 28 - 29.
