Sketchbook of travels in Scotland and a tour to Kent: p. 36 Doorway, Collegiate Church, Maybole, Ayrshire 1895
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
17.2 x 11.4
inscr. b.l. "THE COLLEGE. MAYBOLE."
The church was founded in 1371 by Sir John Kennedy of Dunure, but most of the fabric dates from the late medieval period. It served as the burial place for the Kennedy Earls of Cassillis up to the close of the 17th century, and the doorway with the Kennedy arms in Mackintosh's drawing dates from this time. The details at bottom are from the cornice (left and centre) and the architrave (right and bottom centre). The drawing probably dates from the same visit as 53012/23. The page has been numbered inaccurately in an unknown hand as page 38.
