This is one of several drawings of profiles of mainly 18th-century English headstones that Mackintosh made throughout his career. He maintained that they 'put to shame the designs of architects and others which make the modern graveyard hideous'. [British Architect, 22 November, 1895, p. 360] The page has been numbered inaccurately in an unknown hand as page 44.
