Sketchbook of travels in Scotland and a tour to Kent: pp. 4 - 5 Cowane's Hospital, St John Street, Stirling 1894
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
34.4 x 11.4
d. and inscr. b.c.: "STIRLING. / 1894."
Dating from 1637 to 1648, Cowane's Hospital was founded by John Cowane, Dean of Guild, to house 12 poor residents of the burgh. It was designed by John Mylne Jun. (1611-1667), master-mason to the Crown. Mackintosh, rather than choosing its imposing entrance frontage, has drawn its rear elevation, concentrating on its chimney stacks and alternating tall windows which break through the eaves to form gables. The pages have been numbered in an unknown hand inaccurately as pages 6 - 7.
