Sketchbook of travels in Scotland and a tour to Kent: pp. 6 - 7 Bog violet, Corrie, Arran
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
34.4 x 11.4
inscr. vertically b.l. "CORRIE"; and b.r. "BOG VIOLET. / PENGUIQULA [sic]"
The study of a bog violet (penguicula vulgaris) is one of ten flower drawings in the sketchbook. Mackintosh's interest in this genre stems partly from the design courses he took at the Glasgow School of Art where, along with other contemporary art schools, the study and analysis of plant form was an essential element in the training of designers. The pages have been numbered in an unknown hand inaccurately as pages 8 - 9.
