Sketchbook of tours in East Anglia and Devon: p. 1. Studies of the traceries on the parclose screen, St Edmund, Southwold, Suffolk 1897
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
18.6 x 13.4
inscr. t.r.: "SOUTHWOLD / ROOD. SCREEN."
The Perpendicular Gothic traceries on Mackintosh's drawing are from the dado of the parclose screen in the north aisle of the church. This section of the screen contains 12 depictions of angels. The drawing (top left) is either a mistake or a wilful misrepresentation on Mackintosh's part: this has been corrected in the drawing (centre) which shows the tracery as it exists. The drawing (bottom right) is a study of the base of the screen. The page has been incorrectly numbered "3" in an unknown hand.
