Sketchbook of tours in Kent, Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Perthshire: p. 21 Roof truss, St Agnes, Cawston, Norfolk possibly 1896
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
22.8 x 17.7
inscr. b.r.: "J.[?] Greig _"
This study of Cawston's 15th-century roof was probably made in 1896 as Mackintosh visited Norfolk in August of that year in the company of the architects, Alfred Greig, whose name may be on the drawing, and John Stewart [Information provided by John Wallis]. The drawing depicts one of Norfolk's finest angel roofs featuring figures with outstretched wings on its hammerbeams and wall-plates, as seen on the right of the page. At centre is the chancel arch. The page has been inaccurately numbered "23" in an unknown hand.
