Sketchbook of tours in Kent, Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Perthshire: p. 51 South porch, St Mary, Chiddingstone, Kent 1910
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
22.8 x 17.7
s., d. and inscr. t.r.: "CHIDDINGSTONE / KENT 1910" and vertically "C R M M M M"
The wisteria-wreathed south porch dates from 1625-9, when the church was rebuilt after a fire. Mackintosh has depicted its round-headed Renaissance arch, with its keystone, beneath a Perpendicular Gothic label with sun dial above. At centre right he has incorporated a study of the doorway's arch moulding and capital and a sketch of one of the porch's Gothic side windows. The page has been inaccurately numbered "53" in an unknown hand.
