Mackintosh made a large number of studies of profiles of English headstones, almost all dating from the 18th century. He maintained that they 'put to shame the designs of architects and others which make the modern graveyard hideous'. ['British Architect', 22 November, 1895, p. 360.] The page has been inaccurately numbered "61" in an unknown hand.
