Sketchbook of tours in Kent, Sussex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Perthshire: p. 69 Headstone, St Mary Magdalen, Cowden, Sussex
CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928)
pencil on paper
22.8 x 17.7
inscr. t.l.: "COWDEN"
The headstone is unidentified. Mackintosh made a large number of studies of profiles of English headstones, almost all dating from the 18th-century. He maintained that they 'put to shame the designs of architects and others which make the modern graveyard hideous'. ['British Architect', 22 November, 1895, p. 360] The page has been inaccurately numbered "71" in an unknown hand. The drawing must date from the Mackintoshes' visit to Sussex in 1909.
